Chalk Board Coffee Mugs

daytwo3.jpg

daytwo2.jpg

daytwo1.jpg

I got these Coffee mugs that are like chalk boards and they are nice because you can draw something or write a message to someone when you make them a cup of coffee. So I thought I would photograph them each day this year. I probably wont post every day but I will photograph the morning mugs everyday to share. Mixed in there I will also have other photots from time to time but at least it gives me something to photograph daily.

Lea is the Best

Lea is our au pair that has been with us since December 2008 and will be with us through May 2010. She is truly amazing. Life with her has been amazing. Especially with Noah exploring his independence. She doesnt let him push her around.

Cup of Coffee

cupofcoffee.jpg

Here is a rare cup of coffee from a local coffee place. Monika and I have been like many people in the world these days economizing and figuring out new ways to save save save. We've been figuring new ways to be better with fianances with our lives and with eachother. One of the things we stopped doing is buying coffee from outside. We brew our morning cup and our second cup to go in our travel mugs. Today was a random day that I needed a third cup and here it is. I shot this with my phone (htc touch pro, a nice answer to the I-phone) Any how I hope to shoot more soon.

They didnt seem to mind the mudddy, slushy conditions they just wanted to play some good ole soccer. It was unseasonally warm and much appreciated.

Half Empty or Half Full

halfemptyor halffull.jpg

Some people will always see the glass as half empty. Just like some people won't see what they have because they are too focused on what is missing. What is lost. What they never had. Some people will even take it a step further and say hey why is that person's glass over there have more than mine or Hey I wish I had that glass instead of mine.

Alwayls look at life from new perspectives

vicincrib.jpg

photo: Monika Jouvert

I love to look at life from different views. Its one of the things that attract me to the camera. To me its a way to capture life that is ordinary but yet special. I know that is sort of a contradiction but that is what life is. There are two sides to everything. Ying and yang. So I enjoy parenthood but I hope that one thing my children, my family, my friends see that although I am a good parent a good role model I am also still myself and still a child at heart. I never had the idea of having to grow up meant that I had to let go of my toys. Monika took this picture of me while i was playing with Noah in his crib.

Towards the end of the year

thinking.jpg

The End of the Year is near. Its the Holiday season. People are rushing around buying things. My sister has a quote that she puts at the bottom of her emails. It says the most important things in life are not things. I like that phrase. I'm a people person. I love people. I love you. In my life I hope that the people around me feel my love and understand me sometimes.

Trip to the Doctor

doc2.jpg

doc4.jpg

doc6.jpg

doc3.jpg

Noah had his 3rd doctor's visit that basically consist of weighing, measuring his length/height, and his crown. Also the doctor asks questions of how our little wurstel is eating, sleeping, and pooping/peeing. So Noah weighs 8.5 lbs or 3.77 kg and is 21 in. or53.34cm long/height.
So Monika and Noah's hard work with breast feeding is a success. Noah is now eating every 3 hours as the doctor suggested we should try because every 2 hours was not giving us enough time in between especially at night to get some sleep.
Noah can now hold his own head pretty much and he is seeing his toys and noticing where sounds are coming from and reacts to our voices or noises.
Noah also recieved his social security card and his birth certificate. So now he is officiallly here. All in just a month, not bad.

What solace brings a walk at the beach. Monika said to me the day before that she wanted to get out and go to the beach because I had run around friday ( Home Depot , Costco, getting Victoria )and she didnt get out. So we eased into our day having breakfast around midday then get to the beach around 2 or 3. The sun is so strong after this time of the day. We've been using a wrap pouch kind of carrier to carry Noah around instead of putting him in the stroller. Its a cool thing and he loves it. It frees up your hands, keeps him tight and snug like he was in mommy's womb, and gets people looking and wondering whats in the sack. I love the beach. Especially off season. I probably go to the beach off season more than I do during the Summer time. It was just a great time.

Well we've had some busy days. On Thursday Noah-Efrain and Mommy Mon were able to come home. We had to promise to see Noah Efrain's doctor the next day because strictly breastfed babies lose weight the first few days. As long as it isn't more than 10% of the original bodyweight then its all good. So after getting home and settled in Friday we had our first Dr. appointment for Noah Efrain. We were worried that we would be told to give the baby formula because he had loss too much weight but alas here was a Dr. that was on our boat and saying the baby looked great and that there was nothing to worry about. Friday night Noah Efrain met Victoria for the first time and it was great! Its been very good and Noah-Efrain is doing excellent. Mommy Mon is doing amazing. Daddy is doing amazing. Victoria Big Sis is doing amazing. Here are just a few more photos trying to just keep posting. Have to say I am a bit tired these days but for a good reason. Tomorrow I will post Noah-Efrain's first visitors at home...

Back to School and Back to Work...

summertime1.jpg

Labor Day, according to Victoria, my 12 year old daughter, has informed me that yesterday marked the end of summer and by the way she made it sound like the end of life. Seems the highways and roadways in general will be more congested, the subways and buses more crowded, beaches, parks and greenways less crowded. One of my memories of going back to school was when a teacher would have you write in class usually on the first day or at least that first week something titled What I did this Summer. So in that tradition I will be posting a few pictures from this summer that will be in a new slideshow on my website.

Cafe Bustelo

cafebustelo.jpg

Mornings just arent the same with out Cafe Bustelo. One of the first things in the morning is a trip to the coffe maker to get some java and get that first cup of the day. There are times in my life when I stop drinking coffe all together others when I only drink once or twice a week but these days one or two cups a day is quite enjoyable. Some mornings like today, I woke up and my coffee was already waiting for me. I love when that happens.

Time

Time is running fast and the months have passed in the blink of an eye. Major events of my life are happening so close together. My european life is merging with my american life. People are crossing the ocean to come and celebrate with Monika, me and our family and friends over here. Its an amazing feeling when family and friends from both sides are coming together. I'm experiencing a joy that is so great. At the same time I am saying bye for now to the friends that I've made here, bye to the places that have become the backdrop to my everyday life. At the same time I tried to do somethings that I wanted to do while here but didn't get around to them. There are just too many... Our wedding plans are just about finished(if that is possible) now is only the fun part. Time to celebrate, to eat and drink, dance and just have fun.

People

This was a guy that saw me taking pictures was just saying " hey take my picture, take my picture! " He was with two other guys and some girls and they were showing off for their girls. Its funny when people just say hey take my picture and they are happy to have their photo taken. Many times they dont even ask where they can see this photo or if I can email it to them. I always get a kick out of that.

cooldude.gif

This girl saw me taking pictures in front of WestBahnhof and then she stopped at a traffic light. I took about three or four pictures of her and she didn't mind at all she remained very relaxed as if i werernt even there. I like when people do that.

bikergirl.gif

this was a funny picture for me because I was trying to catch this boy sitting on the steps of the Library on the Gurtel next to Burggasse. This girl walks into my picture and then was making faces as if I wanted her in my picture. So just because she didnt want to be photographed I feel the need to post her picture.

This last photo I like. A neighbor of mine that I ran into. He didnt realize it was me until after I took a few photos of him, must be a good book!

I really like taking photos fo people. I'm alway delighted with the diversity of the people I encounter here in Vienna. Its now tourist season so I think even more there is a mix but the main difference I find is more english in the streets!

Nici

nici.gif

25talife.gif
I was walking down Mariahilferstrasse and I was approached by a kid working for Amnesty International. They are a group working for the end of female mutilation. Although this happens primarily in Africa and Asia they are bringing awareness worldwide. So I met this girl Nici that was overseeing the group of kids approaching the passerbys on the busy shopping street. Nici was nice enough to let me snap away some fotos of her. There will be a series of these fotos on my site that will start in April. The new site will just be a series of photos galleries of new fotos that i really like. Oh, and to talk about my previous posting it seems there are a few #$%^ers out there watching my photoblog so I will make a better effort to keep some fresh postings to keep y'all interested and entertained. Today I went night skiing at Semmering. Its the closest " moutain " to Vienna. About a year ago was the first time I skiied and it was at this place. But wow, what a difference a year makes. Today I fell about three times. Not because I was out of control or anything, just because I am trying big jumps now. I'm talking about a couple of meters high. Not only big jumps but at a fast speed. I love skiing!! So see you soon!!

Now that all the hype is over...

Now that all the hype is over, all the holidays past lets talk about resolutions. New Year's Resolutions. A year ago I had a conversation or conversations and I came up with an idea that I will try again this year. I decided not to have any resolutions except one of course. I named the year 2005 the year of MODERATION. I have to say it worked. It means that I didn't say no to anything or rule out anything. A little bit of this and a little bit of that. I came up with this idea because I saw that with me and with many people there is this tug of war or see saw of life decisions where people say I won't eat this any more or I won't drink this anymore only to be met with set back after set back and followed by binge eating or drinking so I realized or I theorized that if you dont put so much pressure on yourself by depriving yourself of the normal wants and desires that come everyday then you won't have this pressure building up and eventually do more harm to your self mentally and physically. Maybe a bit dramtic but there is some sense in there some how, I promise you. So now I name the year 2006 the year of gluttony. haha. Just kidding, I name it the year of Moderation 2. How original? What can I say I'm american some of our greatest movie titles are sequels, The GodFather 2, Star Wars: Episode II, Gremlins II, Reanimator II, Rambo II, Jaws 2 uh, ok maybe not but anyway its the year of Moderation 2 which just might be an excuse not to make silly resolutions where I won't do this or eat this or drink that. blah blah blah. Its also a way to poke fun at the millions that bought excersise bikes this winter that will just become places to hang your dirty laundry. Oh by the way I just told Monika that I havent bathed this year, haha. How is that for Moderation. Maybe I'm trying to do things the European way. ;-) The pictures below are from our New Year's Party. It's my 5th year straight of having a New Year's Party and obviously my first in Europe, in Vienna, or anywhere else than New York. It was really great and we had a great time. I will put the complete photos on my website tomorrow along with the ones from Christmas. Ok Gute Nacht! Bis Morgan!

Happy New Year !

happynewyear.JPG

As hard as I tried not to write a sappy entry this holiday season I can't help it. New Year's Day for me as for many is a time of reflection and contemplation. I think for me with a year that has had so many changes and has brought me half away across the globe to live and experience a life that is entirely different than I have ever known. That in itself enough to have me in deep thought but added to that I am happily engaged to be married and in an amazing relationship ( I didnt think this would ever be possible, I had given up on the idea of finding the special person that was out there for me.) Monika and I are experiencing a new life together. Living together and learning more and more about one another as well as about us as a one together. I am learning german, enough said there. I also find myself working as a photographer for the first time in my life. There are so many new things that are happening. I'm just learning that I love skiing. I am playing basketball every week with a group of guys and girls that are Austrians. Monika and me work out 4 days a week and try to keep in shape and eat healthy (most of the time, hee hee. My friends and family here are growing to be just as many as I have back in New York and my friends and family in New York are in touch with me and doing mostly well. Who knows what tomorrow holds for me but I feel one thing is sure, there are many new things for me to see and do and I want to live my life to the fullest. I want to do it all see it all. I love life and more so I am happy with my life. With my decisions and very happy that I changed my life about 7 years ago and back then it was so scary but things since then just kept getting better and better. I am so fortunate and thankful to everyone that has helped me and everyone that I love. You all know who you are. So this is the end of a sappy posting but what the hell. I hope all of you have started out this year in good health and good spirits!! See you soon and keep in touch!

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Who are you?

georg2.JPG

georg1.JPG

Today I am posting two pictures that a friend of mine, Matthias Cremer took with my camera. Matthias works at Der Standard to see more of his work. -->click here <-- The pictures are of another friend of mine Georg. Georg is a journalist and works for a company that is sort of the Associated Press back home. Different newspapers in Austria use their stuff, but I don't think they have their own newspaper. So today I have been very pensive. I think this dreary weather does this. Maybe I just have my period. I can be a bit over dramatic sometimes. Any way who am I? Who are you? or as I would say to Danny or Martin, Who the $%^# do you think you are mother#$@!&%!?? Anyway if anyone reading this I am interested to hear back from you. Who are you? what do you do? what do you want out of life. Are you happy? What do you want most? What do you have that you are thankful for. How are you enjoying life? Do you like life? are you bored out of your mind? are you too busy to know? blah blah blah, anyway. Post me an answer or email me privately, I would like to know Who are you!! I'll post my answer to that question tomorrow. Today is the first day i approached someone and I asked them if I could sit with them and have a coffee and ask them a few questions and snap a few pictures of them. At first I could see they were suspicious and perhaps very skeptical. By the end of the conversation they agreed and were smiling. So I will be posting that soon. Then you will see Who that person is. Don't worry its not someone famous or anything just an ordinary person. Those are the people i find most interesting.

Happy Thanksgiving

Being Thankful is something that is lost. People tend to take things for granted. It's just human nature to. I try to be thankful everyday and I think that the people around me everyday see this and feel it. So Thanksgiving day isn't celebrated here but I found out about a holiday celebrated in the countryside mostly called Martini Day (Nov.11) that celebrates St. Martin. So for this day there is a goose specially raised and eaten for this day or during this season. The name of the goose is Martini Ganz (goose). I had the opportunity to try this last week with Monika and her parents at a Haurigan (wine house). It was delicous and to me it tasted alot like pork (Schweinefleisch)
So back to being thankful because the season calls for it, I will say that I am very thankful and greatful for all of the people that have made my "vacation" possible. So many people are involved in this. From those that gave me support and encouragement, to those that were a bit skeptical at the farfetched idea. I have to say that everyone gave me good feedback, well wishes and words of encouragement.
I'm greatful to my family, friends and peers that await eagerly for my updates back in the US and to my new found family, friends and peers that are over here supporting me, helping me and getting to know me. So remember to be thankful for the everyday people, blessings, and ordinary occurrances everyday. Surprise someone and tell them you appreciate what they do for you everyday.

Breakfast at Tunnell

This has become the afterschool hangout, we just go and have breakfast and talk. I've made some nice school friends and I really enjoy their company. I'm really enjoying Vienna. The girl in the first picture in the back is Nikki and today is her Birthday, Happy Birthday Nikki!

The second picture is of my friend Jo. She is really fun to hangout with. We sometimes do our german homework and then just practice speaking german to one another. I find her adventures here in Vienna so funny and interesting.

A week

So, its been a week of no posts. I'm not sure why I havent posted. I've been busy and I've been going places and doing things but I havent had the motivation to post. I'm not sure if its the change of seasons and shorter days or if I'm not managing my time correctly. Any how I feel a little out of it. I mean I'm having a good time here and it seems I know only great people. An Apple a day

apple1.JPG

I saw my friend Martin's Photoblog today and it makes me a bit homesick. German courses is a bit difficult for me right now and I'm a little discouraged but don't count me out just yet I will continue studying and giving it my all. Also developing relationships takes work too and everyday life takes work. I think the cold weather here now is making me a little blue. Mornings and evenings are really cold ( 6 degree celsius ). At least its sunny during the day it will reach 16 degrees celsius. By Sunday it will drop to 4 degrees celsius. Brrrrr. Well thats it for the weather forecast. First Day of School

schule.JPG

Today was the first day of school for german courses at the university. There are about 6 spanish speaking persons in my class 3 from spain and 3 from south america. That makes us the majority in the class. Its very interesting to me to find spanish speakers here in Austria. So far my instructor whose name is Brigitte like Monika's mom has spoken to students in english, french, and of course german.

Maroni Stands

maroni1.JPG

As me and Tini walked around I saw this stand and Tini explained to me that this time of year the Maroni stands start poping up all over the streets. Maroni is the Austrian word for chestnuts. You can also get these patatoe cakes at the stands.

Post Office

postofficeDSC_7626.JPG

I don't know if the banks are the first place that came up with their system of having people lining up, but I have to say it is the best. I kringe at the thought of line. Europeans wouldn't know the concept of line if it bit them... well you knowt the rest. Any how Monika ended up in the wrong line as many other lines churned out customers happily headed home after their work weeks. We even tried to do the " you stand on that line I'll stand in this line" trick to see if we got done quicker. It seems I ended up in the wrong line also.

Wednesday Night

pizza1.JPG

Wednesday is one of my basketball nights. So this wednesday after playing we went out to eat at Pizzeria Venezia on Praterstrasse by the Nestroy pl. station of the U1. Wolfgang, Mattias, Martin and myself went to eat some delicious italian food. We ate, drank, talked, teased our lovely waitress, and laughed. Our ages ranged from 30 to probably 50's. ( I don't want to offend anyone ) I will hopefully be doing interviews with my basketball mates in the upcoming weeks. I got this idea of interviewing people that I have become friends with from my friend Martin. He interviewed me one night at home while we were eating dinner and drinking. He designed my blog site and now lives in my old flat. You can read about his adventures at newyorkphotoblog.com

After I left the basketball group, I decided to walk for awhile because I was going to meet Monika and her volleyball group (she plays volleyball on wed They finish later than I do. So I walked toward Mariahilferstrasse Until Monika called me and told me where they were going. In the mean time while I crossed the Danube canal I took this picture of the risenrad.

Wednesday Night continued again

arnes.JPG

So Monika called and I rode my bike the usual way around the ring, but at Museum Quarter, instead of jumping on Mariahilferstrasse, I went along the MQ and up a couple of side streets till I ended up on Westbahn Strasse (this street leads to Westbahnhoff) I met the volleyball group and then Eric joined us later. We met a nice little greek place called Arnes.

Registration for German courses at the University

regday.JPG

So I waited on line for about 3 hours to register and pay for german courses. I met a girl named Cristeen, she is from Hawaii, went to college in Texas ? then went to NYU. Her father is Austrian so after all her school years she decided to take a year off and come to Austria to learn german. It was nice to meet someone that had spent some time in NYC and have a nice long conversation to pass the time on this horrible hall way that was very hot. then after making it to the front they told us that they only accepted cash payments. We walked down the block to the atm. Poor Cristeen, she could only withdraw 400$, but she needed $640 because she is taking the full semester course. She had to go back the next day. I am taking smaller trimester courses for $345 so I was able to go back and pay. I start on October 10th.

Relaxing

We stayed home and just things around the house, spent time talking and just being together. A very peaceful day. Its a good thing when you can spend a full day indoors with someone and not go crazy. Yes?

Waffeln

waffeln2.JPG

So today Ramona and Alex invited us over for waffeln(waffles!) It was late afternoon and little did I know we were going to have what turned out to be dinner. It was quite tasty and there were plenty of toppings. Appricott jam, Nutella, Cherry jam, Nestle Quick chocolate/white chocolate syrup, and a few others. Ramona kept the waffles coming and we all kept eating them! It was a great sunday snack!
