Last week I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge one day after work and these are some of the photos that I took. I've been over the Brooklyn Bridge many many times but I believe this was my first time to walk over the bridge.

Then this week I rode bike to work for the first time this season and coming home I take the Brooklyn Bridge(going to work I take the Manhattan Bridge.) I noticed that the painted lines that separate the walking side from the biking side had just been repainted.

Some people might be looking for other photos on my photoblog. Sometimes I post things right away, other times I post them later and sometimes I don't post them at all. I'm not sure why this happens sometimes. In life sometimes I feel like there isn't enough time to do everything.

Oh well I will try to post my Dance Africa weekend photos soon. As well I have some more photos that I took this day on the Bridge. I feel that these that I post today are more representative of the Bridge itself the next group I feel will be more representative of the people walking, running and biking across the bridge.

This is a picture I took when Monika and I were walking back from a nice day with friends from Vienna, Stefan and Marina. These were some flowers on the Park Avenue divider. I will post the rest of the pictures of that day tomorrow.

Empire State Building

I was running around the city a couple of times this week picking up a few things I needed for my camera ( Nikon D70 ) A back up battery, an lcd screen cover, a CF card, and a new lens. I couldn't find my lens because its on back order everywhere. Any how I didn't shoot much except for this.

Mama und Papa in ("the real") Little Italy, Arthur Avenue in the Bronx

mamapapabx.jpg

Last Week Monika's Parents ended their round the world trip that started in Vienna a few weeks before in New York City. Well they had one more stop at home after New York City. So after a day in the city shopping with Monika ( I had to work ) we decided to go to what I refer to the real Little Italy. I tend to be very patriotic when it comes to my home boro of the Bronx. It won't take much to get me started on all the beauty there is to be seen and ejoyed. Any way we were headed to one of my favorites on Authur Avenue, Dominicks but they had a 45 to 1 hour wait so we went just up the street to Emila's. I had never eaten there and was very excited and then later very pleased that we did. The decor was more intimate than Dominick's. Monika's mom, Brigitte brought this up when we were going to wait at Dominick's. The food at Dominick's is excellent but its sought of "lunch room seating". They pack em in there. I have to say it was a good call on Brigitte's part. We ate until we were ready to burst.

Riding the N train

Living way up North in the Bronx makes for an interesting commute. During rush hours (7-12 or 5-8 ) its not so bad but if I decide to go to a movie after work or go to a party, a hip hop concert, a dance performance, a play, or an Art opening or anything then all of a sudden I could be looking at a 2 hour or more commute. I've been taking the express bus more often these days. Although I knew about the Express Bus it wasnt until my friend Martin, who stays with us from time to time, continually praised the express bus service that I was convinced. I will have photos later on that but for now I give you a few of the N train. The Express bus goes to 23rd street and Madison Avenue and then I catch the N to Brooklyn or the W or R to 14th and then the Q to Brooklyn. One benefit is that the last express bus comes at 1:30am and it leaves me a block away from my apartment.

Leaving New York

Wow, It's my last night in New York. I have to say this has been a very nice visit. Although I have spent more time away from New York than in it, it has been very nice. I've have felt the love and connections to my New York people on this visit like never before. Seeing Victoria on the brink of becoming a young lady is amazing. Going to Florida and Idaho to see my family is so nice. And going back to my home for the last 8 months is going to be great as well. I told a friend today that my circle of friends and family in Vienna in the past months has grown just as big as my circle here in the USA. I like that. It shows me that no matter on what contenent I am on I will always make a mark on those close to me. So I tell you this... Keep smiling and keep your eyes on the prize.

Part one of my NYC trip ends...

So its been a whirlwind of a weekend. I managed to survive and I am having a great time. Its funny that although I will be here 3 times as long as I was in December that it seems like the time is already gone.
To see Victoria is so amazing. We went to central park yesterday on our treasure hunt. We had buried some "treasures" in tiny tin boxes a few years ago. we tried to find them from memory but we were unsucessful. As Victoria has reasoned maybe, someone else just found them or maybe they moved underground as dirt shifts in to the nearby lake. Maybe with a metal detector we will be more sucessful?
Tomorrow I head out to Orlando, Florida, the Sunshine State. I'm looking forward to seeing my dad's newly built house and spending some time with my family there.
Back in the late 80's there was the begining of a big migration of New Yorker to Florida. Used to be the number one destination for retiring elderly up and down the east coast. In the 80's I think with New York City being a bit wild and a high crime city people were just tired and looking for a better place to live and raise their families.
So any way I will spend the time, fishing with my dad on the lake, eating, talking, playing dominoes, just kicking back and relaxing. Maybe a trip on the casino boat, and a trip to either Clear Water to visit an old friend of the family that used to live in the Bronx or maybe a drive up to North Carolina to visit my cousin who just bought a house with her husband.

So I'm back in NYC for a visit and first thing was that my suitcase stayed behind in Amsterdam. My flight to Amsterdam from Vienna was delayed so before landing I was told I wouldnt make my connecting flight and would have to spend the night in Amsterdam. Although that was a nice idea and I wouldn't mind it, something about missing a flight bothers me. So when I exited the plane I calculated that I had about 12 minutes to navigate to the other side of the airport. The map that calculated estimated travel between certain areas calculated that I wouldn't make it. So I made a mad dash through the airport hoping that now one tackled me or shot me. I made it to my flight but when I spoke with one of the flight crew she told me that although I could run my suitcase couldnt and that probably I wouldnt get when I arrived in New York. So instead I recieved my suitcase Saturday morning. Michaela my good friend that is handling mail and other things for me while I'm in Vienna was there to pick me up and drop me off at home. So we caught up on the car ride home and talked about what was new in our lives. I got home and had Pizza with Kelly and Alex, my house sitters, and just watched some good ole American TV in english too! Friday morning was filled with phone calls and taking care of various errands and a trip to pathmark. It also was the day that Martin my friend from Vienna arrived too. He is working for Magnum Photos again on a 3 month stay this time. I saw my cousin Jr who is the dashing gentle man with the bald head and goatee. After finding out I wouldnt get Victoria Friday I decided to go out with Jr to Lenox Lounge on 77th. I took a gypsy cab from Bartow ave to the 6 train, then the 6 train to 125th Street just to take some photos of this train station, then the 4 to 86th and then I took a yellow cab to 77th and 1st. It was great to just be in the city and feel the vibe and the people. not to mention I was wearing just a button down shirt. no jacket and it was totally fine!! Its the warmest weather that I've been in since last fall. So I had nice time at Lenox Lounge, pictures to be posted tomorrow. Saturday I got up and then went to get Victoria. Victoria has been growing so much in the last 7 months, its amazing. So it looks like she grew a few more inches. We came home and cooked vegitable lasagna, played video games, watched a movie and just hung out and talked. It was an amazing day. I'm kinda exhausted but at the same time in just a few days here I'm having a great time. Since today is a cloudy day and rainy we have decided to go to Central Park to dig up treasures that we buried over 2 years ago. I hope the dirt is soft enough to dig. See you soon!!

Atlantic Avenue

AtlanticAve.JPG
You know Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn is a crossroads. Just about every train there is in New York comes throught there. The Long Island Railroad also makes a stop there. The trains that some how do not stop there can be found with in a couple of blocks from there. Kind of weird to be writing this from Vienna, but maybe tomorrow I will photograph the subway stop across the street from me. Its name is Westbahnhof. There are two trains that meet there, the U6 and the U3. Upstairs from there are the Railroads that go to the outter regions of Vienna and eventually to other cities. Out side of Westbahnhof are also Buses and Trams. So I guess in a way this is a crossroad as well.

My Last Sunrise in The Bronx

LastSunriseInTheBronx.jpg
I shot this at 5:40am on August 5th. I was restless with anticipation of my trip and was finding it hard to sleep more than 5 hours. This is the view i have from my kitchen window in Co-op City. Its a look of an inlet off of the Long Island Sound and Pelham Bay Park area. In the far distance north is New Rochelle.
